Writing to Remember

Writing to Remember
By: Ellie Thornsbury

The Kroger shooting this past week left the community in a state of both confusion and grief. WHAS was left with a big weight on its shoulders, it had to honor the victims while still leaving the town with a sense of hope. This is a big task, and I think Tyler Emery did a great job completing it.

WHAS published many stories about the shooting on their website, but one stood out to me in particular. This article discusses the grocery store's reopening. Clicking on the link I was expecting to find something that I could criticize for violating a yardstick or element of journalism, but instead I found an insightful article that captured the public's real point of view.

The article includes quotes from three members of the community, who all attended the vigil honoring the victims. They talked about how Kroger is different after the incident, but will forever be a town staple. I thought this was both a smart and respectful move on Tyler Emery's part. Instead of restating the tragic events without any new information like many other articles, he wrote what the people needed to hear. He took the community's words and gave them a voice.
