And The Winner Is...

And The Winner Is...No One From Louisville! Not Even Anyone From Kentucky.
By: Ellie Thornsbury

In WHAS's eyes, someone from South Carolina winning the mega millions is a locally relevant story.  Not only is this win unrelevant to people in Louisville, it's not even relevant to the town of the winner. Seriously, who else does this affect other than the one single person who got rich? This topic has no use or importance to any Louisville citizen. If a story does not affect many people for a long time, it simply shouldn't be published.

This is not a one time event, no, this is a reoccurring problem for WHAS. This article was accompanied by yet another lottery article on WHAS's website. Of the first 15 stories, 2 were about the lottery. The problem arises yet again on their broadcast. As I have been tracking their station for the news media project, I noticed they have way too much screen time dedicated to the lottery. They not only reveal the numbers, but on multiple occasions they have had actual stories about them. It's obvious the only reason WHAS does this is to fill empty time slots, but this is no excuse.

News organizations should be proud and confident of the newsworthiness and local relevance of each and every article they put out. If not, they are violating their own principles; a true journalism sin.
